Yala national park safari

December 22, 2008 by Luka Esenko · 3 Comments

Yala NP is the most popular national park in Sri Lanka. No wonder why, we were there for about three hours and yet we saw amazing number of wildlife.  I have been to several African countries for Safaris so I did not expect much from Yala. But I was pleasantly surprised by both the landscapes and wildlife we encountered. Here are just some photos of the animals I took during this wonderful safari.

Dickwella - a hidden Buddhist haven

December 15, 2008 by Luka Esenko · 5 Comments

Dickwella is just a small town to the South of Sri Lanka. It is not on a tourist map although there is quite interesting temple to visit. My local guide told me it is nothing special and that we should skip it to save time, but I insisted to stop there. A friend of mine told me it is a must to see it.

Pearl of the Adriatic

November 20, 2008 by Luka Esenko · 6 Comments

There are numerous historical cities scattered all over Croatian Adriatic sea. Porec, Rovinj, Pula, Zadar, Sibenik, Trogir, Split and of course - Dubrovnik. I visited all of listed cities, but Dubrovnik is my favourite. It is the history, the architecture, its people, lively atmosphere, the restaurants and tourists that make it so alluring. It doesn’t really matter at what time you visit the city in the morning, during the day, the evening, you will always feel the life of the city. And if you want to party, just ask the saints on the photo above where to go.

Over Mura moving cake

Prekmurje

Prekmurska Gibanica. My favourite. Reach in flavour, reach in calories, satiable and sweet. Some of the ingredients; poppy seeds, walnuts, apples, raisins, cottage cheese, cream.

Prekmurje region of Slovenia offers some of the best cuisine in the country. you should definitely try some of it. Prekmurska gibanica (of course), Bograc, Bujta repa, Dodoli - it all sounds strange, but the taste is heavenly.

A brief encounter with wild boar family

November 10, 2008 by Luka Esenko · 1 Comment

Wild boars are really fun to visit at Bavarian forest national park. You can actually get into their enclosure and observe them eye to eye. The enclosure is huge and the boars are not always to be seen, but if you visit them two or three times you have a good chance to come across them.

Wisent - the giant of the European forests

November 5, 2008 by Luka Esenko · 8 Comments

Wildlife is one of my favourite type of photography. Being in nature on the fresh air and observing the animals of all kinds is a rewarding enough by itself and if I manage to get a decent shot -what would I wish more? Unfortunately it is also one of the most difficult kinds of photography, the animals are unpredictive, usually hard to find and even harder to find in a real photo opportunity position.

Autumn in Bohinj

October 16, 2008 by Luka Esenko · 7 Comments

October. One of the most beautiful months in Slovenia. No wonder why - the autumn colours are just beautiful and on a sunny Sunday it would be a sin to stay at home!Bohinj seemed a natural choice for its beautiful lake and surroundings. Since I was the only photographer I departed when it was still dark and the others joined me later atBohinj. It was hard to get up that early but when I experienced this magnificent sunrise I was glad to do it!

Lake Bled - a bit differently

October 13, 2008 by Luka Esenko · 12 Comments

Bled is one of the most photographed highlights of Slovenia. No wonder - the place is just calling for it! When you look at the postcards and tourist brochures it seems it is impossible to make some unique shots. Well, there is always a way to get a different photos - you just have to find it.

October 8, 2008 by Luka Esenko · 7 Comments

The smoke that thunders or “Mosi-Oa-Tunya” is a local name for Victoria Falls. The Falls lie on the border between Zimbabwe and Zambia and can be visited from both countries. I visited the Falls from Zimbabwean side, from the town Victoria Falls.

Pumpkin seed gathering
The Halloween holiday is getting closer and closer so here is the post about pumpkins. The photos were shot during my assignment to Prekmurje on the end of August. Prekmurje is very flat region and people there say that when you step on a pumpkin, the whole region is at your sight.

Old Water mill on Mura River

September 29, 2008 by Luka Esenko · 2 Comments

Miller Vladimir Babic
On the way back home from Prekmurje I stopped at Verzej, a small town on the right side of the Mura river. There is one of the two water mills that are still left on the river. The one of Babic family is still operating in a traditional way and I wanted to make some photos of it. When I arrived only the miller’s wife was there and she was quite reserved. Her husband Vladimir joined us shortly and he was kind enough to take me around.

Prekmurje - a different Slovenia

September 22, 2008 by Luka Esenko · 4 Comments

Prekmurje
Prekmurje region is the remotest part of Slovenia. It lies to the North-east of the country, bordering to Hungary, Croatia and Austria. I had been to Prekmurje many times, but never with my camera. This August I went to Prekmurje with an assignment to shoot photos for Tourist Information Centre of Moravske Toplice. They needed photos for their new brochures of the county and surroundings. Moravske Toplice lies in the heart of Prekmurje and the town is known for its thermal water and a Spa.

The Wonder of Plitvice lakes

September 14, 2008 by Luka Esenko · 12 Comments

Plitvice lakes national park lies somewhere in the middle between Zagreb and Dalmatia coast in Croatia. Higher altitude, dense forests and clear waters make the air more pleasant even in a hot summer day. A good reason to stop for a day to relax a bit. I visit Croatia regularly and I’ve been to almost all of its coast but never managed to stop at Plitvice. Maybe i was ignorant because it is one of the top attractions of the country and there are always hundreds of tourist buses at the gates. I was sooooo wrong! The place is absolutely fantastic and so much different of the other highlights of Croatia. I arrived directly from the Hvar island where it was damn hot and humid and I was eagerly waiting for the temperature drop. At the Plitvice NP it was really a pleasant atmosphere almost 20 degrees Celsius lower than at the coast.

Julian Alps - a beautiful day.

August 28, 2008 by Luka Esenko · 3 Comments

Neja and I decided to go hiking to Julian Alps. For the first time this year. Since we had time only till afternoon we decided to drive to Vrsic a 1611m high mountain pass. Vrsic is a great base to explore surrounding area and there are a few easy accessible peaks to visit. We left our car at the top of the Vrsic (there is a parking fee) and headed to Sleme.

Walvis bay - Mola Mola safari

August 23, 2008 by Luka Esenko · 3 Comments

On the way from Swakopmund to Sesriem we stopped at Walvis bay. The idea was to do the Mola Mola sea safari to watch the seals, pelicans, dolphins and other marine animals. The coast was misty and cold. Our skipper Eddie was a great guy with a great sense of humor. He was making jokes all the way and he was really knowledgeable. As soon as we left the harbour we got funny visitor - an adult seal named Saddam Husein (the photo above). He just sat at the back of the boat and waiting for  the fish.

Canoeing on the Ljubljanica river

August 14, 2008 by Luka Esenko · 3 Comments

Last week my father and I went canoeing on the Ljubljanica river. Funny, I live on the riverbank of the river, but this was the first time this year I went boating. It was a nice sunny afternoon and the light was beautiful. There were plenty of animals around and most of them are accustomed to the presence of people. It is quite easy to take photos, but you shoud be careful that the boat doesn’t turn around.

Namib-Naukluft National Park

August 11, 2008 by Luka Esenko · 2 Comments

Namib desert is probably number one attraction in Namibia. The red dunes are the subject on every tourist brochure photos and a visit is in every itinerary of Namibia that travel agencies offer. And I do not wonder why. I was admiring the photos myself and I hardly waited to get there. The Namib is the second largest desert in Africa and it is the part of Namib - Naukluft national park. Most popular place to visit in the park is Sesriem, which is a starting point to the Sossusvlei and Deadvlei areas.

Welwitschia mirabilis

July 30, 2008 by Luka Esenko · 1 Comment

Welwitchia Mirabilis is an extraordinary plant. It can live for more than thousand years and some of them have their leaves several metres long and they never stop growing. The plant has actually only two leaves, but the wind and bad weather tear them apart into hundreds of stripes and it looks like there are several. Wikipedia has a nice article of Welwitchia if you are interested in more. Read more

Lady Africa

July 27, 2008 by Luka Esenko · 2 Comments

When i saw her I was enchanted by her beauty. She was selling the souvenirs - cute litte Herero dolls - by the road from Damaraland to Swakopmund. Her colourful dress is tipical for the Herero women and her brooch in a shape of Africa? I had to take a photo of her. Read more

Stripes in Etosha

July 24, 2008 by Luka Esenko · 5 Comments

Etosha is one of the most interesting national parks I have visited so far. The name itself means “The great white pan” after huge mineral pan that dominates the park. Etosha NP is huge - it is even bigger than my home country Slovenia.  For a visit of the park I would recommend you t least three nights in the park to cover the most interesting areas. Even if you do self driving it is not difficult to navigate and spot animals. The best scenario would be driving from one waterhole to another and then another… Waterholes usually attract a lot of wildlife and even if at the moment you get there there is no animals it is worth to stop. If you stop the car engine and just enjoy the quietness and wait for a while, animals will come. Read more

Cape Cross seal colony

July 17, 2008 by Luka Esenko · 5 Comments

Cape Cross seal colony is situated on the Atlantic coast of Namibia. It is around one hour and a half drive from Swakopmund. If you are arriving from Damaraland it is worth to turn north first to Cape Cross to visit the colony and then back to Swakop. This is how I visited it.

At the butcher's.
Agra is one of the most visited cities in India with foreign and local tourists. Its glorious Taj Mahal is a must see for every tourist visiting this diverse country. Most of the people visit just Taj and Red fort, maybe Fatehpur Sikri on the way to Rajasthan. But there is a lot more to see in this touristy city. Read more

Bear’s head

A bear's head
This time just one photo. It was taken this spring near Tolmin in Soca river valley. It was quite difficult to get this shot - it was raining and it was windy. Well it was worth to get all wet for a shot like this !
