Rakov Skocjan in Winter

January 28, 2009 by Luka

After the New Year holidays it was a wonderful Winter in Slovenia. My father and I decided to check out the Cerknica lake. We knew that it had plenty of water at that time and we hoped it was frozen all over. At Karlovica cave there are usually lovely icicles in the Winter, but when we arrived it was a bit disappointing. The icicles were to small and they were only a few. The lake was frozen indeed, but we already have some nice Winter photos of the lake from before. We decided to check out the Rakov Skocjan regional park.

What a sight! We were both astonished when we saw the beautiful ice formation created by the river Rak and low temperatures.

It was freezing and I thought my fingers will fall away when I was standing in the river wearing only rubber boots…

This lovely bridge is a subject on many photographs I’ve seen before, but this is the first time I’ve seen in covered in ice.

Ice chandeliers. Splendid sight. The natural light illuminated the ice and it was glowing like actual chandelier!

At Rakov Skocjan there are no limestone formations like in Krizna cave, but there were icicles instead.

Macro world of ice.

The river Rak, that created this beautiful natural wonder.

Must admit that all images are beautiful. You captured the heart of winter in a Karst environment. But the fourth image is absolutely the best.
    Good work.

This January has certainly been marked by ice, hasn’t it? :)
Great photos, as usual, and I can’t decide which one I like the best. But I do see that a tripod was essential for this photo session. Love the milky effect of long exposures on water.

    Hello!

Great photos. It looks that we’ve been there in the same period.

The lack of better equipment and experiences is apparent compared to your photos, but anyway I invite you to look at my shots as well:
