Pericnik Waterfall in Winter

January 19, 2009 by Luka

Pericnik Waterfall was on the top of my wish-list for photography this winter. Until now I was too busy with my other projects and I couldn’t go there although the weather conditions were perfect. It was arctic cold for the last month and the weather was shiny. This weekend I checked the weather forecast and realised that there will be only one day before the thaw. A call for an action!

The starting point to the Waterfall is Mojstrana town in Gorenjska. From there it is around one hour of walking. It was a true winter fairy tale – soft and fresh snow and not too cold.

Finally we arrived to the Pericnik Waterfall – what a view! It was totally frozen – a perfect opportunity for photography.

Andrej couldn’t believe his eyes so he needed a home made “strengthener”.

Ana was already in action…

Falling water made a deep siphon into the snow and ice.

I was really surprised cause this is the first time I saw blue ice in Slovenia! Incredible!

Snow detail.

Ice stalagmites. Even more beautiful than in Postojna cave!

There was a lot of broken ice below the waterfall.

When the sun illuminated the waterfall it was Majestic!

The weathermen were right! It was the last day before the thaw. As soon as the sun rays touched the ice it started to melt. The water was pouring from everywhere and soon the icicles started to break. First smaller ones then the big ones. What a sound! When the huge one collapsed only a few metres away from me I was shocked – and covered with ice powder!

It was a hell of a day! Probably the most interesting day this winter! And very productive from a photographic point of view. These weeks I am too busy to post regularly, I am photographing instead. So check back sometime – some great stuff is coming;)

Aaaaaaaaaa! Great pics! Wonderful models! ;)

You captured some really good photos here. And a few different perspectives from mine. I love the one you took standing practically underneath the icicles! it gives such a sense of height. Well, it did almost cost you your life, but it was worth it! :) ))
