Julian Alps - a beautiful day.

August 28, 2008 by Luka Esenko

Neja and I decided to go hiking to Julian Alps. For the first time this year. Since we had time only till afternoon we decided to drive to Vrsic a 1611m high mountain pass. Vrsic is a great base to explore surrounding area and there are a few easy accessible peaks to visit. We left our car at the top of the Vrsic (there is a parking fee) and headed to Sleme.

Russian chapel. It was built by Russian war prisoners between the first world war when they were forced to build a road to Vrsic pass. There is a memorial ceremony every year at this beautifully renovated chapel.

A view to the north-east.

Mountain flowers.

Neja is inspecting a decayed tree trunk. Biologists…

There are beautiful Larch forests on the way which give a pleasant shade during hot summers.

The weather was changing within minutes, creating interesting motifs.

I like the flowers, but I never remember their names:)

Jalovec. A majestic view of this mighty mountain revealed to us when we reached Sleme!

Can you find a face of a petrified Pagan Girl?

Pine tree detail. I just love the smell of these trees in the mountains and seaside!

Erjavceva koca (Erjavec mountain hut), just below the Vrsic pass.

A hike to Sleme was a pleasant half-day trip. I recommend it to everyone with small children and people that would like to visit the Alps at its best in an easy way. The route begins just at the top of the road at Vrsic pass. If you arrive from Kranjska Gora it is at your right hand side and it is well signed. Easy hour and half walking will take you to Sleme with small alpine lakes. Just five minutes further up there is Slemenova Spica from where you will have nice views to Planica, Tamar valley and even to Austrian Alps to the north.
